 March 2014 Newsletter

With the extremely welcome rain received in the last week or so, demand for fertilisers has jumped significantly. At this stage, single super has remained

at the lowest prices seen for 3 - 4 years. This is largely due to increased competition with new manufacturers supplying super. The high analysis fertilisers significantly jumped in January, and I am doubtful that there will be a price drop on these for the rest of the season. Incitec Pivot have decided to no longer supply returnable bulk bags. If you have any empty Incitec Pivot bulk bags that were purchased from Greens Mandurama, please return them ASAP, as they need to be sent back to Incitec Pivot. The new bags will be yours to keep once used.

ANIMAL HEALTH

With the recent rains and slightly muggy conditions, there have been a few cases of fly strike reported. If you are looking to protect your sheep from fly strike without having long withholding periods (7 days) or export slaughter intervals (21 days), use Clikzin. With up to 11 weeks protection, this would mean you would have a protection period until the third week of May. Available from Greens Mandurama

These conditions may also cause worms burdens to increase before the cooler weather begins. This will impact particularly younger stock, so if you haven’t already given your sheep a 2nd summer drench, give us a call. We have some excellent deals at the moment in a variety of drenches for both sheep and cattle.

If you are looking for a deal on stock blocks, we have a variety of urea based blocks on special. Speak to Mark for more information.

PASTURES

It is interesting and promising to see the high levels of clover germination in paddocks following the rains. If you really want them to fire along, add molybdenum to your fertiliser. In recent times, molybdenum has become more affordable as the gap between straight super and Mo treated product has dropped.

On productive properties, the best way to keep selenium up is by adding Selenium chip to your fertiliser. Selenium chip only needs to be applied at 1kg/ha, and can be easily thrown on the pile whilst spreading. Selenium aids in muscle growth of stock,
and helps to prevent white muscle disease. Generally speaking, the more productive the property, the more selenium is being removed from the soil profile. For under $6/ha, it is well worth considering.

If by chance, you are looking for more clover, we have some available that can be added to your fertiliser when spreading. It is a mix of white/sub/balansa and red clovers that have been inoculated, and available for $3.30/kg.  This year looks like there will be good supplies of all pasture seeds, as harvest has been O.K. As an indicator, we are expecting the prices to remain very
similar to last year.

NEW PRODUCTS

For a limited time we are going to continue the special on the Gallagher MR5000 energiser. Normally $1899, they are on special for $1298, and include a remote which will turn the energiser off when a fault is found. The remote is worth $375, so there is a huge savings to be made. The MR5000 has 25 joules output, and if a fault is found there is another 25 joules ready for backup. This is one of the most powerful “no frills” energisers on the market, and represents great value.

Ute Mat is back in stock. For $90/metre (1.83m wide), this matting will protect the tray of the ute, and help to keep gear upright

For your Information: We just received confirmation
of the ruling of yabby traps around the district.
Basically, Yabby traps are allowed only in private
dams east of the Newell highway – not in creeks or
ponds. Maximum traps allowed are 5 per person,
maximum catch is 200 yabbies person, and all traps
must be fitted with a fixed ring which does not exceed
90mm (to prevent catching turtles/platypus/birds). If
you would like any further information, speak to the
team at Greens, as we have a copy of the rules from
NSW fisheries.
